MBCEA Names Building of the Year Award Winners July 1, 2020

The Metal Building Contractors & Erectors Association identifies seven projects that represent metal building systems’ excellence

Every year, the Metal Building Contractors & Erectors Association (MBCEA) recognizes the highest quality of metal building system construction. Usually, recipients receive their awards at the annual conference, but this year the three-day, in-person event was transformed into a 30-day online conference with 10 unique seminars that provided important industry information and money-making opportunities.

Hundreds attended, but people who missed any or all the seminars can view them over the next six months. Topics covered were energy codes, accreditation, wall and roofs specialties, and leadership skills among others. To learn more about the conference and register, go to www.mbcea.org.

Builder of the Year entries are judged by an outside panel of judges based on the following criteria:

  • Aesthetics
  • Unusual or interesting features
  • Quality
  • Complexity
  • Green building elements

Educational and Recreation Category Winner – Boston Sports Institute, Wellesley, Mass.

The plan for the Boston Sports Institute project consists of four buildings: an ice rink, field house, pool and entry. Clear spans provide uninterrupted space for the ice rink, pool house and field house, while mezzanines wrap shoes areas and offer patrons viewing stands as well as a running track. Below the mezzanine space was provided for locker rooms, a warm pool, offices and other support spaces. The 101,842-square-foot building was erected on a constrained site where workers only had access to three sides of the building.
