Metallic Design Build Award: Building of the Year

Construction has completed at the Alma del Mar Frederick Douglass Campus, a 52,000 GSF K-8 school located on Church Street in New Bedford. This project sits on a 4-acre site and utilizes pre-engineered metal buildings which provides maximum value and an expedited schedule for the client.

Construction includes new classrooms, gymnasium, cafeteria with servery, offices, and support spaces. The MEP equipment is designed and constructed for peak operating efficiency. Exterior work includes a parking lot, pickup/drop off area, playground, and outdoor recreational & classroom space.

The project was designed and will be built utilizing extensive sound control measures to eliminate ambient city noise. The school will also feature environmental graphics that will cost effectively enliven the interior spaces of the school while also educating students on the campus’ namesake, Frederick Douglass.

“Frederick Douglass fought for the opportunity to learn, to read, and write at a time when educating Black people was against the law,” said Lee Blake, president of the New Bedford Historical Society in the Alma press release. “His struggle for freedom and social justice will be an inspiration to our youth who will lead the change the world needs to tackle injustice.
